Easy Oven Mitts

Crochet your own oven mitts to match the rest of your kitchen with this free pattern from Bernat Yarns. These beautiful oven mitts are quick and easy to make and are also useful.

Size:

To fit average adult’s hand.

Materials:

Bernat Handicrafter Cotton Twists (340 g/12 oz) or yarn of your choice.
- 1 ball of #42116 (Country Twists).
Size 9 mm (U.S. M or 13) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge:

7 sc and 8 1/2 rows = 4" [10 cm] with 4 strands of yarn.

Pattern:

Mitts (make 2):
With 4 strands tog, ch 18. Join with sl st to form a ring.
1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each ch around. Join with sl st to first sc. 18 sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc.
Rep last rnd 6 times more.

Shape thumb gusset:
1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of next 8 sc. (2 sc in next sc) twice. 1 sc in each of next 8 sc. Join with sl st to first sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of next 8 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 2 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 8 sc. Join with sl st to first sc.
3rd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of next 8 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 4 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 8 sc. Join with sl st to first sc.
4th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of next 8 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 6 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 8 sc. Join with sl st to first sc.
5th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of next 9 sc. (Place marker for thumb). Miss next 8 sc. 1 sc in each of next 9 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. 18 sc.
6th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc.
Cont even until Mitt from beg measures 9" [23 cm].

Shape top:
1st rnd: Ch 1. Draw up a loop in each of first 2 sts. Yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook – sc2tog made. 1 sc in each of next 5 sc. (Sc2tog over next 2 sc) twice. 1 sc in each of next 5 sc. Sc2tog over next 2 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. 14 sts.
2nd row: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 sts. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. (Sc2tog over next 2 sts) twice. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. Sc2tog over next 2 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. 10 sts. Fasten off. Sew top seam.

Thumb:
With 4 strands tog, join yarn with sl st at marked sc for Thumb.
1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as last sl st. 1 sc in each of next 7 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. 8 sc.
Rep last rnd 4 times more.
Next rnd: Ch 1. (Sc2tog) 4 times. 4 sts. Fasten off, leaving a long end. Thread end through darning needle and draw through rem sts. Fasten tightly.

Loop:
With 4 strands tog, ch 12. Fasten off leaving a long end. Sew loop to foundation ch as shown in picture.

This looks so great! I am definitely going to try this pattern out! Has anyone tried this yet? Do the mitts actually stand up against the heat from the oven? I have so many ideas on colors for this, especially since you use 4 strands at a time! This would be a great house warming gift, too!

Simple yet a kitchen necessity for everyone. I actually never knew that trivets, hot pads and oven mitts were to be made with cotton yarn because any other yarn will not be heat resistant. If there is one thing you should know when browsing all these lovely kitchen patterns, you should know THAT! Most important thing. I like the color of these! Oven mitt patterns seem to be hard to come by...

Remember you need to use cotton yarn or other heat resistant yarn. Acrylic yarns will melt....Be sure it is safe for heat. Otherwise looks lovely! Will try this using cotton--peaches and creme,,,,

You are EXACTLY right! And for those who think otherwise? If you use acrylic yarns it doesn't even take all that much heat to cause it to melt! I know, I learned the VERY hard way! thanks for posting that lomamiller.......

I was wondering about the 4 strands, but when i bought the yarn, I only found 3 balls of 100g each. So I only used 3 strands. The only problem is that the mittens become less thick than the original, and with bigger holes. If I use a smaller hook, then they come out smaller. That's all. I'm going for the bigger and looser mittens, and they are very pretty! Almost too pretty to use!

There were a few comments on whether its (1) ball or (4)......can this be answered please? Why have the option to leave comments if their not answered? I am going with 4 balls if I receive no reply... crochet 4 tog must be 4 balls. Hopefully the typo will be corrected for those inexperienced crocheters.

This is probably going to sound stupid, but if you just have one ball of yarn, how do you crochet using four strands??? Don't laugh....I'm a beginner out here obtaining knowledge!!

I've had this pattern for a couple years and finally decided to try it. I couldn't believe how fast it went, and WOW, they're awesome. Once I showed them to people all I heard was I want some!! My vote? Crochet.

Did anyone try these yet? Do they take 1 or 4 balls of yarn? They look great!!! Just would like to know. I really don't want to make 4 sets of the same color if it only takes 1 ball.

I'm sorry, but I'm confused. It says one ball of yarn is needed, but then says use 4 strands at a time...? Could you clarify what "use 4 strands together" means? I can't wait to crochet these mitts! Thanks!!

Hi Susanbeauchamp7--Thanks for the comment. That does seem strange. I checked in with the original pattern on Bernat.com and it says the same thing. Perhaps you cut the one ball of yarn into 4 equal strands?
